I was just doing a winter checkup of my computer hardware to be sure none of my archived drives are failing when I found these images I shot about 10 years ago while visiting Death Valley. Some of my favorite nature photos I’ve done, they come with a great story!
A couple friends and I needed a break from the rigors of our photography classes and just wanted to get outside and shoot for fun. We had assignment after boring photo assignment so the idea of shooting for ourselves seemed great. Problem is, we didn’t check the weather report! While rain and clouds can make most locations more interesting, a flat gray sky is terrible for desert photos! We were up at 5am to hike into the dunes for sunrise but when the sun came up we had directionless flat lighting that was totally boring because of the thick overcast. I remembered an experiment I ran with making super high contrast film negatives a couple years before so I found the right scene, tweaked my camera settings and went on shooting. We enjoyed the rest of our time out there and I didn’t really think much of what I’d shot as the conditions were just so terrible.
When I got back to the wet lab I processed to give a huge jump in contrast then scanned the negatives. Even looking at the negatives on the light table I was pretty underwhelmed. A friend showed me a technique of layering scans to create even more contrast in an image and when I put it all together it looks like an interesting day in the desert when the reality was that I was lucky to get even one usable image!
Even before the days of digital we tweaked our images to get the best results no matter what the photographic conditions. Funny, because that’s pretty much what I do every weekend these days!

One of my favorite things about wedding photography is seeing just how creative my brides get with their details. From little birds nests to candy tables to flower arrangements and even setting up entire lounge areas I’ve seen some great stuff! Tie it in with some great lighting and it will look fantastic. It really is amazing how spending that extra time on the “little things” will take wedding decor to that next level and stamp your personal style on your day. Of course it’s important to keep the “feel” of all your details tied together but don’t be afraid to mix it up and get creative!

This first image (above) was from a wedding I shot several years ago out in New York. The details were AMAZING and they did a great job of working in existing elements with the decor of the venue.

I love the seating area the couple created for this wedding then matched the colors with the candy bar and their wedding colors! Everything tied together so well.

I loved the wedding favors at this wedding!

One of my favorite wedding details ever, the birds nests held little chocolate robin’s eggs. There were a lot of kids at this wedding and they LOVED it!

When choosing flowers and colors, it’s possible to make a dramatic statement and vary the colors quite a bit.

Jenny and Tom went all out on the details for their Santa Barbara Wedding reception, every detail was handmade and painstakingly put together. The end result was a gorgeous wedding reception that was 100% Jenny and Tom’s style!

It’s always strikes me as funny how cyclical photography is; 3 years ago boudoir sessions were HUGELY popular but have waned in popularity recently. I think a combination of a poor economy reducing people’s budgets and possibly even people feeling a bit down about themselves as a result really shrunk the number of my clients asking to do For His Eyes Only shoots. I don’t know if it’s because people have a more positive attitude with the economy or if it’s just all the extra workouts people are getting in because they are unemployed (!) but I’m booking a ton of boudoir sessions right now. I’ve even had a bride book for during her bachelorette party as a gift from the bride to her bridesmaids (and their husbands!).
But don’t worry, you don’t have to be a Victoria’s Secret model to do a boudoir session, my job is to make you look your absolute best and I promise you’ll look amazing!
